Abstract

Children are an essential group in every society and studies have shown that this group are an avid media user especially the visual medium of television. The television stations therefore have the duty and responsibility of programming for this consumer of their stations. Studies have shown however that these media audience do not have a say in what is programmed for them on the television stations, yet they are a keen member in the very commercialized world of television programming based on the free market place of ideas of the Libertarian philosophy. This paper takes a look at how television stations programme for children viz the requirements of the broadcast regulators in Nigeria, National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) especially in terms of prominence given to scheduling programmes for them. Though programming in terms of quantity is within regulations by stations looked at but can still be considered highly deficient. It is hoped that television stations can improve on the prominence given to programming for children in their schedule in relation to programmes for adults.
