Using the Groupthink theory as framework, this study explores how popular messaging App. WhatssApp can be used to resolve conflicts in formal groups – with a group conflict in a church setting as case study. The researcher applied the participant observation method and sought answers to three three principal questions: How effective is the WhatsApp medium in resolving the social conflict (in a formal group)? What factors aid or inhibit the effectiveness of the WhatsApp medium in resolving the social conflict (in the Group)? What gratifications did group members derive from belonging in a WhatsApp group? The researcher created a WhatsApp group of members of the church where a major conflict had occurred and made himself the Administrator of the Group over six months, monitoring how conflicts are resolved on the Platform. The study reveals that WhatsApp helped significantly in resolving the group’s crises. Cost, situational context and extent of group cohesiveness were found to be inhibiting factors and group members principally sought ‘recognition’ and ‘escape’ as gratifications for belonging to a WhatsApp group.
