Abstract

Exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) is considered as natural and the cheapest infant feeding option that acts as the first inoculation and which provides antibodies for the neonate and this requires behavioural awareness. However, studies indicate that establishing a desirable behavioural awareness requires knowledge, approval, intention and ultimately practice. This study ascertained the extent of nursing mothers’ level of awareness on EBF, and how such has translated into actual practice of exclusive breastfeeding in the face of poor adherence to early exclusive breastfeeding information in Nigeria. The study adopted the Social Ecological Model for Health Promotion and the method adopted was In- depth Interview and Focus Group Discussion (FGD). Three focus group discussion sessions were conducted in clinics and TBA centres, one in each of the existing senatorial districts in Ogun State. It was found out that parents and parents-in-law, the conventional media, and health workers were the major sources of information acquisition on exclusive breastfeeding in Ogun State, with distractions from information on baby formulae, myths, peer, friends and family influences. Nursing mothers who attended ante-natal session in TBAs also reported that they have more sources of information than those who had their ante-natal sessions in public health centres. It is believed that sources of health information are crucial to the believability and credibility of information on EBF. Information on EBF obtained has translated into actual practice of exclusive breastfeeding in Nigeria.
